Tulsa, Oklahoma - After posting a school-best fourth-place finish in the Western Athletic Conference a year ago, the Tulsa women's basketball team has been picked to finish in sixth place according to the 2000-01 WAC Basketball Coaches' Preseason Poll.

Tulsa returns six letterwinners and two starters for the 2000-01 campaign. Second-year Head Coach Kathy McConnell-Miller, the 1999-2000 WAC Coach of the Year, led the Hurricane recorded a 14-15 overall record and a 9-5 WAC mark. Tulsa's 14 were the second most in a single season and the most since the basketball program was reinstated prior to the 1996-97 season.

The SMU Mustangs were tabbed to win the conference title for the 2000-01 season. SMU, the defending regular season champions from a year ago, earned six first-place votes and tallied 61 points. The Ponies posted a 22-9 season last year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Hawai`i earned one first-place vote and received 51 points to finish in second place. TCU, Rice, the 1999-2000 WAC Tournament champions, and Nevada, the league's newest member, were picked to finish third through fifth, respectively. TCU and Rice also received one first-place vote each.

Fresno State, UTEP and San Jose State were picked to finish behind Tulsa in seventh through ninth-place, respectively.
