Tulsa Women's Basketball Inks a Pair of Texas Standouts to National Letters

Jamie Dreiling and Bianca Smith will join the Golden Hurricane in 2005-06

Nov. 15, 2004

Tulsa, Oklahoma - Tulsa Head Women's Basketball Coach Kathy McConnell-Miller announced today the signing of Texas prep standouts Jamie Dreiling and Bianca Smith to National Letters-of-Intent.

"The first time I saw Jamie and Bianca play, I knew right away I wanted to see them in a Tulsa uniform," McConnell-Miller said. "They have the skills to make an immediate impact on our program and will give us a great boost entering Conference USA. Both players come from programs that have consistently won high school and national championships."

Dreiling is a highly decorated 6'1" forward from Rio Vista High School in Rio Vista, Texas. She is a two-time district MVP and BCI All-American, and has led her BCI team to back-to-back national championship games, where they finished as champions during her sophomore year and posted a runner-up finish during her junior campaign.

During her junior season of 2003-04, Dreiling averaged 22.9 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 4.3 steals per game, while shooting 50-percent from the field and 71-percent from the free-throw line. She was named to both the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Texas Basketball Magazine first teams, and was a Super Team Top-Five performer. Dreiling was named the District 15-2A and all-county Offensive Player of the Year, and was tabbed to the Region II first team and to the all-state squad. On the AAU level, she led her team to an AAU 17U national championship and was named to the AAU all-tournament team. As a sophomore, Dreiling garnered District 6-4A MVP honors and was an all-Region I second-team performer. She was named the Dallas Morning News All-Area Offensive Player of the Year and was the Denton County Newcomer of the Year.

Dreiling, who also earned letters in volleyball, track and tennis, selected Tulsa over TCU and North Texas.

"Jamie is as versatile a player as we will have in our program. She is a three sport-athlete that excels in everything. With her size, she has worn numerous hats on all of her teams. Jamie has the ability to compete on the block or beyond the three-point line. She has competed and won at both the scholastic and national level. Coming from a family with a coaching background, Jamie knows and understands the game. She is a coach's dream on the floor," McConnell-Miller said.

A native of Houston, Texas, Smith is a 5'9" sharp-shooting guard from Bellaire High School, who averaged a team-high 15.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 4.3 steals per game, and connected 90-percent of her free throw attempts during her junior campaign. A three-time team captain, she was an all-district first team selection as a junior and second team performer as a sophomore. Smith ranks as the third-best wing player by the Greater-Houston Area Girl's Basketball Report. On the AAU level, she plays for the Houston Elite, which is one of the nation's top AAU programs.

Smith was also recruited by Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M and Marshall.

"Bianca is an exciting player that makes things happen on the floor. She displays great leadership at both the high school and national AAU level. She has the ability to score off penetration and is accurate beyond the arc as well. She can put up big numbers against great competition. Bianca is a physical player, yet has great finesse and confidence with the basketball. She is ready to compete at this level," McConnell-Miller said.
