Tulsa, Oklahoma - The Tulsa Golden Hurricane women's basketball team will open the 2000-2001 regular season this Friday at 5:00 p.m. against the 14th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners in the first game of the 2000 Bertha Teague Classic at the Mabee Center on the campus of Oral Roberts University.

Second-year Head Coach Kathy McConnell-Miller returns six letterwinners, including two starters, from last year's 14-15 squad. Tulsa (0-0, 0-0 WAC) is led by senior Denise Wagner and junior Carla Morrow, the lone starters from a year ago. The duo is the top returning scorers and rebounders from the 1999-2000 campaign. Wagner was third in scoring with 8.8 points per game and first in rebounding with 6.2 boards per contest. Morrow was third in scoring last season with 9.0 points per clip and second in rebounding with 6.1 rebounds per outing.

Oklahoma (0-0, 0-0 Big 12) begins its fifth season under Head Coach Sherri Coale. Coale has an overall coaching mark of 53-63 at OU. The Sooners welcome back 13 letterwinners and four starters from last season's 25-8 NCAA "Sweet 16" team. A pair of juniors return to lead the Sooner attack. LaNeishea Caulfield was OU's second-leading scorer in 1999-2000 with 15.3 points per game, while junior Stacey Dales was the third-leading scorer on the team with 12.7 points per contest and the top assists leader with 5.8 per outing. Oklahoma, the 1999-2000 Big 12 Conference regular season tri-champion, advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen before falling to eventual national champion, Connecticut, 102-80.

Friday's game marks the 18th meeting between the Golden Hurricane and the Sooners. Since the series was launched during the 1977-78 season, Oklahoma has a 17-0 record in its meetings with Tulsa. The two teams squared off in Tulsa in the first-ever meeting and OU captured an 80-68 decision in that inaugural game. Last season at the Bertha Teague Classic in Norman, Okla., the Sooners downed the Hurricane, 93-70.
