Tulsa's Shu-Yin Liu in 20th Place at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate

New Orleans, La. - In an 18-team field, 10 squads which are ranked among the nation's top-25, the prestigious Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship got underway Sunday morning. The Tulsa women's golf team shot a score of 306 for 18th place after the first round, but senior Shu-Yin Liu is in 20th place in one of the nation's toughest individual fields this year. Liu carded an even-par 72, while fellow senior Kristina Merkle scored a round of 74 on Sunday afternoon at the par-72 English Turn Golf and Country Club. Merkle finished the day in 44th place overall. Starting the round on hole 10, Liu went birdie-birdie-par-birdie for a three-under par score after four holes. She bogeyed the par-5 15th hole and made the turn at two-under par. On her final nine holes, however, Liu was two-over par with three bogeys and a birdie on the par-5 sixth hole. Merkle was four-over par after her first 14 holes, but birdied the par-5 sixth hole and par-4 ninth hole to finished the day with her two-over par 74 score. Tulsa's Antonia Von Wnuck's round of 78 puts her in 77th place, while Heather Smith, in her first collegiate tournament for the Golden Hurricane, carded a round of 82 for 87th place and Karson Bizzell is one stroke back with a score of 83 for 88th place. Host Tulane holds a one-stroke lead over the nation's No. 2-ranked Duke Blue Devils and No. 25 UCLA. Tulane carded a six-under par 282, while Duke and UCLA sit at 283, followed by #4-ranked Alabama (285) and #3-ranked Florida (286) rounding out the top-5 teams. Individually, Tulane's Emily Penttila finished the first day with a five-under par 67 to lead the field, while teammate Gemma Dryburgh and Alabama's Stephanie Meadow are tied for second place one stroke back at four-under par 68.
The second round gets underway Monday morning at 9:00 am in a shotgun start as bad weather is anticipated for New Orleans, while the tournament will close-out on Wednesday with the final 18 rounds Team Results 1.
