Tulsa's Kristina Merkle in First Place Tie, Tulsa Sits in 4th Place at 2012 Clover Cup

Mesa, Arizona - Tulsa junior Kristina Merkle is in a first-place tie and the Golden Hurricane team sits in fourth place at the 2012 Clover Cup after Saturday's second round. Merkle carded a score of two-under par 70 today, while as a team the Hurricane shot a round of 292 at the par-72 Longbow Golf Club with temperatures in the high 70's with winds reaching upwards of 20 mph. Colorado, ranked 15th nationally, has opened up a 24-stroke lead over second-place Oklahoma as the Buffaloes have a 36-hole total of 558 after today's seven-under par 281. The Sooners are at 582, while host Notre Dame is in third place with a 584 total. Tulsa is in fourth place with a score of 586, while three teams - Iowa State, Florida International and Texas Tech - are tied for fifth place with a score of 599. Merkle, who had a first round total of four-under par 68 yesterday, shot a two-under par 70 today for the Hurricane. Merkle was one-under after her first nine holes, teeing off from tee 10, but got into trouble on her 11th hole, the par-4 second hole with a triple bogey 7. However, Merkle finished out with four birdies on the final seven holes to finish the day with her 70 and a 36-hole total of 138. Tulsa senior Kamryn Ruffin finished her second round with an even-par 72 after a first round 77 on Friday and has a 16th-place score of 149. Fellow senior Marita Engzelius and sophomore Kayla Riede are one stroke back and tied for 22nd place with a six-over par score of 150. Engzelius carded a round of two-over par 74 today as she birdied the final hole, while Riede totaled a round of 77 today. Senior Sarah Elliot shot six strokes better for her second round with a score of 76 today and a two-day total of 158 for 48th place.
Tulsa also had three golfers playing as individuals as Anna Young is tied for 48th place with a score of 158, Shu-Yin Liu is in 53rd place with a total of 159. Nanna Nielsen is in 71st place with a score of 177. Individually, Colorado has three golfers taking up the top three of the top-4 spots with Emily Talley tying Tulsa's Merkle with a six-under par score of 138. Colorado teammates Alex Stewart and Jessica Wallace are one shot back with totals of 139. The final round gets underway on Sunday morning at 8:00 am (PT). Team Results 1. Colorado 277-281=558 2.
