Tulsa's Sarah Elliot Holds First Round Lead at the C-USA Championship

Hattiesburg, Miss. - Tulsa sophomore Sarah Elliot is in a three-way tie for first-place after the opening round of the Conference USA Women's Golf Championship. The Hurricane team sits in fourth-place after a first round 297 at the par-71 Canebrake Country Club.
Defending champion Tulane carded a score of six-over par 290 to take the first round lead, followed by second-place Memphis (295), third-place East Carolina (296) and fourth-place Tulsa (297). UTEP is in fifth-place with a 300, followed by SMU (306), Marshall (309), UCF and host Southern Miss (310) tied for ninth place and UAB (330).
Elliot shares the opening round lead with UTEP's Shang Huang and Tulane's Ashley McKenney with one-under par 70s. After a par putt on her first hole, the Tulsa sophomore had an eagle on the par-5 second hole to take an early two-under par score. However, Elliot didn't finish the first nine holes as good, suffering bogeys on holes 6, 8 and 9. On the second nine, Elliot went birdie-birdie-par-par-birdie on holes 10-14.
Tulsa freshman Kristina Merkle, ranked 44th nationally, is just one stroke behind the leaders after an even-par 71 today, Merkle had three birdies and two bogeys on her first seven holes and finished the front nine at one-under par. She played even-par for the next eight holes before suffering a bogey on the par-3 16th hole.
Tulsa sophomore Shu-Yin Liu carded a round of 76 for 21st place, while fellow sophomore Marita Engzelius had a round of 80 for 37th place today. Senior Abby Allford shot a round of 82 and sits in 40th place.
The tournament continues on Monday with second round action.
