Round 3 Results Get Acrobat Reader

WOLCOTT, Colo. - Kristina Merkle and the Tulsa women's golf team both made big climbs up the leaderboard again Wednesday, as Merkle shot a 71 to tie for second, leading the Golden Hurricane to a third-place finish at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on the par-72 Fazio Course at Red Sky Golf Club.

Merkle shot under par in each of the final two rounds - 70 in the second and 71 in the third round - to rebound from a first-round 79 and total a 4-over par 220 for the tournament. She finished three strokes out of first place.

The Golden Hurricane posted a team-total 296 - the third-lowest team score of the day - to move up from a seventh place into third. Merkle carded the second-best individual score of the third round, and was the only player in the tournament to score two rounds under par.

All four scorers for Tulsa placed among the top 30 individuals. Senior Marita Engzelius shot an even-par 72 to total 228 for the tournament and move up 17 spots into a tie for 21st. Sophomore Kayla Riede and senior Kamryn Ruffin-Cunningham both tied for 27th with three-round totals of 229. Riede carded a 77 in the third round, while Ruffin-Cunningham shot a 76 on the final day. Junior Shu-Yin Liu posted an 83 Wednesday for a three-round total of 253.

Chirapat Jao-Javanil of Oklahoma took home individual medalist honors with a third-round 72, which brought her total to a 1-over par 217 for the tournament. Merkle tied with Grace Na of Pepperdine and Natalie Gleadall of Mississippi for second place with equal total scores of 220. No individual shot under par for the tournament.

Oklahoma claimed the team title with a three-round total of 899, including a tournament-low 291 on the final day of competition. UC Davis shot 297 Wednesday to total a 904 for the tournament. Tulsa finished seven shots out of first place.

The Golden Hurricane returns to action Oct. 3-4 for the Lady Northern in Glencoe, Ill.
