Tulsa in 16th Place after Two Rounds at the Hooters Match Play Championships

Reunion, Florida - Facing their toughest competition of the season, the University of Tulsa women's golf team opened play with 36 holes of stroke play today at the par-72 Hooters Match Play Championships on Sunday. After the morning session the Golden Hurricane found itself is 12th place firing a 13-over par round of 301. In the afternoon, TU shot a 317, dropping them to 16th place in a field that consists of 14 of the top 30 ranked teams in the country.
UCLA is in first-place overall with a nine-under par score of 567, while the top-five is rounded out by Virginia, Alabama, USC and Duke.
Leading the Golden Hurricane is freshman Marita Engzelius. In her opening nine she traded birdies for bogeys. Engzelius birdied the par-4 sixth hole, bogeyed the par-3 seventh, birdied the par-5 eighth and wrapped up her opening nine with a bogey at par-4 ninth on her way to even par opening nine. The back nine was a similar story for her. She recorded two more birdies and two more bogeys on her way to a first round score of even par 72 landing her in14th place. Engzelius afternoon began with a par on the sixth hole. She went on to birdie her 10th hole of the round, the 376-yard par 4 15th hole before reaching a rough stretch. She played her next five holes at five-over par before closing her round with birdie, double bogey, birdie finishing with a seven-over par total 79. Through 36 holes Engzelius is seven-over par in a tie for 45th place.
Three strokes behind Engzelius in a tie for 59th place is senior Woori Shin. Shin opened the tournament with a birdie on her second hole of the day, the 499-yard par-5 eighth hole. She would record four bogeys in the middle of her round before making a birdie on her 15th hole of the day, the par-3 third hole. Shin went on to finish two-over par on her opening 18 to finish in a tie for 32nd place. On her finishing 18 of the day, Shin could never get things going and settled for a second round of 80. Shin finished day one at 10-over par in a tie for 59th place.
Junior Abby Alford opened the championship with her best round of competitive golf this season. She made birdie on the par-4 16th hole and shot an opening round of five-over par 77. Alford's 77 beat her season best score of 79 which she carded in the final round of The Landfall Tradition. After firing her best round of the season, Alford followed it up on her second 18 of the day by finishing with an eight-over par 80. Alford finds herself 13-over par for the championship in a tie for 66th place.
Freshman Kamryn Ruffin opened her championship with a bogey on her first hole of the day, but bounced right back making birdie on her second hole. That birdie would be the only one on her scorecard in the opening round as she had an opening round 78. In the afternoon Ruffin got off to a tough start before pulling her game back together. She played her first six holes at six-over par. Ruffin then went on to birdie the par-4 16th and finished her round at 10-over par. Through 36 holes she is tied for 74th place at 16-over par.
Rounding out the TU golfers is Shu-Yin Liu who recovered nicely from an opening round 85. Liu improved seven strokes on her closing 18. She made her only birdie of the day on her 16th hole of the afternoon, the par-4 fifth hole to shoot 78. Liu is 19-over par for the championships and sits in 77th place.
The Hooters Match Play Championship resumes tomorrow morning changing from stroke play to a match play format. Teams will be divided into two brackets of eight teams for the final two days of competition to determine the overall champion.
