Tulsa's Kristina Merkle Shares First Round Lead at PING/ASU Invitational

Tempe, Arizona - Tulsa freshman Kristina Merkle fired a four-under par 68 and shares the first round lead with Arizona State's Carlota Ciganda at the PING/ASU Invitational.
Merkle started on hole 10, and had three birdies on the first nine holes, all par four holes. Her first birdie came on the 11th hole, her second hole of the day, then carded birdies on her sixth and ninth holes for a score of 34 on the first nine holes. She began the back nine with a birdie putt on the par-4 first hole. After her lone bogey of the day on the par-4 seventh hole, her 16th of the day, she sank a birdie putt on the next to last hole.
As a team, the Hurricane is in 16th place in the 17-team field with an opening round 306. Host and defending national champion Arizona State leads the field with a nine-under par 279 at the par-72 Karsten Golf Course.
For the Hurricane, Sarah Elliot carded a round of 78 for 70th place, followed by Marita Engzelius' 79 for 77th place. Shu-Yin Liu is in 83rd place with an 81 and Abby Allford stands in 90th place with a first-round score of 88.
The second round of 18 holes will take place on Saturday.
