Tulsa's Kristina Merkle Named Conference USA Freshman of the Year

Irving, Texas - University of Tulsa freshman Kristina Merkle was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, as well as earning first-team all-conference accolades, as announced by the C-USA office today.
Merkle, currently ranked No. 50 in the nation by Golfweek, placed fifth at last week's C-USA Championship with a four-over par score of 217 at the par-71 Canebrake Country Club in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, thus earning a spot on the C-USA all-tournament team.
The newcomer from Honolulu, Hawaii (Moanalua HS), was Tulsa's top golfer this season with a 73.5 stroke average through 25 rounds of golf. She placed among the top-15 in eight of nine tournaments, including six top-5 performances.
Merkle's best performance this year was a first-place finish at the Johnie Imes Invitational in the fall season. She also turned in third-place performances at the Texas A&M "Mo" Morial and the Texas A&M-CC Classic. Merkle also finished 11th overall in the prestigious PING/ASU Invitational, a tournament featuring 11 of the top-25 golf teams.
