TULSA'S SHU-YIN LIU IN SEVENTH PLACE AT NCAA EAST REGIONAL
May 9, 2013
Auburn, Alabama - University of Tulsa senior golfer Shu-Yin Liu carded a three-under par 69 in first round action at the NCAA East Regional on Thursday. Senior teammate Kristina Merkle had an opening round of one-over par 73 at the par-72 Auburn University Golf Club.
Both Liu and Merkle qualified for the NCAA East Regional and will need to place among the top-2 individuals, not on a finals qualifying team, to advance to the NCAA Championship Finals in two weeks.
Liu sits in a seventh-place tie, two strokes behind tri-leaders Emma Lavy of Arkansas, Erica Popson of Tennessee and Emma Talley of Alabama, while Merkle is tied for 35th place in the field of 126 golfers.
Beginning the round on the 10th tee, Liu pared the first six holes before suffering her first of two bogeys on the day at the par-5 16th hole. She ended the first nine holes with a birdie on the par-4 18th. On her final nine holes, Liu had back-to-back birdies on holes 4 and 5 and eagled the par-5 seventh hole to go four-under par. Liu had her second bogey of the round on her second-to-last hole and then birdied the ninth to close out the day at three-under par.
Merkle started out shaky with bogeys on her first and third holes of the day, the par-4 10th and the par-5 12th hole, but the rest of the way scored two birdies and one bogey to finish at one-over par.
Second round action takes place on Friday with the final 18 holes scheduled for Saturday.
