Tulsa Women Golfers in Seventh Place at NCAA West Regional

Erie, Colorado - The Tulsa women golfers are in a three-way tie for seventh place at the NCAA Women's Golf West Regional after the opening round on Thursday. The Hurricane carded a score of nine-over par 297 at the par-72 Colorado National Golf Club. Stanford leads the 24-team field after an opening round of one-under par 287, followed by North Carolina (288) in second place, UCLA (290) in third place, fourth place LSU (291), a two-way tie for fifth place between Illinois and California (296), three-way tie for seventh place with Tulsa, Pepperdine and Colorado (297) and a two-way tie for 10th place between Texas Tech and Baylor (300). Tulsa freshman Anna Young turned in the best round for the Hurricane with a one-under par 71 and sits in fourth place after the first 18 holes. After bogeying her first hole of the day, the par-4 10th hole, Young birdied holes 12, 14 and 17 for her first nine holes to finish even-par on her first nine holes after two more bogeys. Young was one-over par heading into her final two holes of the day before sinking birdie putts on the par-4 eighth hole and par-3 ninth hole. Senior Marita Engzelius carded a score of two-over par 74 with three birdies and five bogeys on the day to place 32nd after one round. Junior Kristina Merkle started out well with a birdie on the par-4 10th hole, but that would be her only sub-par hole of the day to go along with four bogeys to finish with a score of three-over par 75 and 42nd place. Junior Kayla Riede score a round of 77 and is in 70th place, while senior Kamryn Ruffin shot 79 and sits in 93rd place after the opening round. Stanford's Sydney Burlison holds on to the individual lead with a score of five-under par 67.
The second 18 holes will be played on Friday. The tournament concludes on Saturday with the final 18 holes.
