Women's Golf Set to Host Dale McNamara Invitational
Sept. 8, 2011
TULSA, Okla. -
The Tulsa women's golf team opens the 2011-12 season with its home event, the second annual Dale McNamara Invitational, Monday-Wednesday, Sept. 12-14, at The Patriot Golf Club in Owasso, Okla.
The Dale McNamara Invitational, which is named after legendry Tulsa coach Dale McNamara, will feature 15 teams and be played on the 6,626-yard, par-72 Patriot Golf Club course.
McNamara began the Golden Hurricane women's golf program in 1974, and built the program into a national powerhouse, winning four national championships in her 26 years at the school. In addition to the four titles, McNamara's teams finished as the national runners-up five times.
Former TU All-American Melissa Luellen, daughter of Dale McNamara, brings her eighth-ranked Sun Devil squad into the field, which also includes UALR, Arkansas State, UCF, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Longwood, Middle Tennessee State, Missouri, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts Southern Miss and host Tulsa.
"We've got an outstanding field this year, several top-20 teams playing in the event," said Tulsa Head Coach Randy Keck. "I can't say enough about the event. It's named after, in my opinion, the greatest women's golf coach of all time, Coach Dale McNamara. We're excited to have her name on the tournament. She's excited to have her name on the tournament. It's a little more special this year, because Arizona State is coming to play in the event, and Dale's daughter, Melissa, is the coach at Arizona State. They're also one of the top-ranked teams in the country. It should be a shootout at The Patriot. It's going to be a lot of fun."
Tournament play will begin each day at 8:00 a.m. and teams will tee-off of the 1st and 10th tees.
The Patriot was designed by preeminent golf course designer Robert Trent Jones Jr. In a career spanning four decades, Jones Jr. has designed more than 245 golf courses in over 40 countries on six continents - with a stunning 33 courses among Golf Digest's Best Courses in 18 nations. This includes the #1 course in 10 nations, and 28 courses in the top 10.
Over a two-year period, The Patriot was born of the earth. The diversity of the terrain is unique, awe-inspiring - indeed spiritual. Views that stretch 30-miles, virgin forests, jagged limestone walls that climb to heights of 150-feet. It traverses through four distinct and sometimes hostile topographies: lowland marsh, heavy woodlands, high prairie, and dramatic limestone canyons. Jones listened intently to the land, like a father listens to his young child. He patiently and gently uncovered a golf experience like no other.
