Ruggieri comes to TU after serving as a rowing consultant from 2010 to 2013
Richard Ruggieri is in his second season as an assistant coach for the Tulsa rowing team.
In his first season, Ruggieri assisted Tulsa to 23 first-place finishes and 69 medals in 10 regattas. The Lightweight 8+ finished second in the Petite Final at the IRA National Championship, the Varsity 4+ won a silver medal at the Conference USA Championship and the Hurricane went on to finish fourth in the league, the Varsity 8+ won the Lawless Cup and TU medaled four boats at the Knecht Cup.
From 2010-13, Ruggieri worked as a rowing consultant, assisting with the training, program development and program design for elite and collegiate athletes.
Ruggieri served as the head coach for the Clemson women's rowing team from 2007 to 2010, where he led the Tigers to two NCAA Championship appearances, an ACC Championship and two ACC Championship runner-up performances.
Ruggieri guided the Clemson Varsity 8+ to its first appearance in the NCAA Championship in 2008, and a year later the team to its first appearance, where the Varsity 4+ captured the program's first national championship in program history. He coached five athletes to Division I Pocock All-America accolades, 14 to CRCA All-South Region honors, and was named as the 2009 ACC Coach of the Year, and 2008 and 2009 CRCA South Region Coach of the Year.
Prior to Clemson, Ruggieri was the head women's rowing coach at Louisville (2000-2007) and the director of rowing at Bates College (1999-2000). He also served as a coach for Penn Athletic Club (1996-99), the Olympic Trials squad (1995-96) and was the Head Coach for the U23 USRowing National Team (1994-95).
Ruggieri earned his bachelor's degree in physical education form Rhode Island in 1992.
