Tulsa Rowers Earn Four Top Finishes on Opening Day at OU Invitational
March 9, 2013
Oklahoma City, Okla. -The Tulsa rowers put together a solid day of racing in the first regatta of the spring season, the OU Invitational on the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City, Okla. TU will take on Minnesota tomorrow in a duel format.
"Overall I thought it was a really good day for the program," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We've only been on the water eight days this spring, and it was good to see the way the women took on the races today. We are a very young crew, and I love the way this team jumps into the races. We learned a lot and it will serve us well tomorrow, as well as the rest of the season."
In the morning session, TU faced Oklahoma in five races, including three Eights and two Fours. The Hurricane's Third Varsity 8+, which was really the Lightweight 8+, recorded a time of 7:32.00, more than 17-seconds faster than the Sooners to earn a top mark. The Varsity 8+ nearly upset OU, finishing just under four-seconds behind with a time of 7:11.39.
"Our Varsity 8+ was almost able to take one away from OU," Harris said. "They really went after it today and raced the kind of race we have to have to be at the top."
Against Central Oklahoma in the afternoon, Tulsa captured first-place marks in the Varsity 8+, Second/Lightweight 8+ and the Varsity 4+. The Varsity 8+ tallied a time of 7:06.54 to finish with nearly a five second advantage, while the Second Varsity 8+ and Lightweight 8+'s dominated UCO in their race. The Varsity 4+ posted a time of 8:07.34 to win their race.
"We have a lot of respect for UCO," Harris said. "You can see why they went to the NCAA Division II Championships last year. We put together some solid racing against them and we learned a lot, which will definitely help us find the speed we need."
