Austin, Texas - The Tulsa rowers faced both Texas and Yale in the first day of competition at the Longhorn Invitational on Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas. TU will face Kansas State tomorrow morning to conclude the regatta.

In the morning duel against host Texas, the Hurricane captured wins in the Varsity 4+ and Varsity 8+. In the Four, TU earned a nine-second victory, turning in a time of 7:52.2, while the Eight was just 0.2 seconds ahead of the Longhorns in a time of 6:47.3. Texas captured wins in the Second Varsity 4+, Second Varsity 8+ and Third Varsity 8+/Novice 8+, while the Third Varsity 4+/Novice 4+ finished behind Yale.

"I am very proud of these student-athletes for working hard and doing what we thought they were capable of this morning," Harris said. "The team raced their hearts out and I am so full of pride. We had really strong races in all the events and we'll take a few hours and get ready to face Yale in the afternoon."

Yale recorded top marks over Tulsa in all five of the afternoon races, while Texas picked up a win in the Third Varsity 4+/Novice 4+ race.

"Yale is fast," Harris said. "They were the No. 8 team in the country last year for a reason. They are a great team and it was a great opportunity to race them. It shows us the speed we need to be where they are. I think we had solid races, we kept our composure and the team challenged themselves."

"We take on Kansas State tomorrow. They are a well-coached team of good rowers and it should be a battle. We've been having a great time. The team is moving well and has a great attitude, and I think more great things are yet to come from this team."
