Oak Ridge, Tennessee - The University of Tulsa women's rowing team advanced four boats to the Grand Finals and one to the Petite Final tomorrow at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship with today's performance at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

TU will compete in the Grand Final in the Novice 4+, Varsity 4+, Novice 8+ and Lightweight 8+, while the Varsity 8+ will race in the Petite Final.

"It was an outstanding first day at SIRA," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "The Fours had the most races today and they did a fantastic job. Both crews got out, pushed their competition and found a way to be the best on the race course."

The Novice 4+ and Varsity 4+ boats both captured top times in their respective heats and semifinals, to take the fastest times into their Grand Finals tomorrow.

"The biggest thing is that both Fours showed levels of aggression and maturity that we haven't seen in a long time," Graduate Assistant Michelle Sechser said. "They have taken these boats and raced with so much determination and pride, and they are set up nicely for tomorrow's Grand Finals. They are so responsive and they are fearless, and they have taken that and run with that."

The Novice 8+ was really tested today. They fell behind in the first quarter of the race, and Kansas passed the Golden Hurricane at the 1,000-meter mark, but TU kept charging and placed second in the semifinal.

In the Varsity 8+ race, TU didn't quite make its goal of advancing to the Grand Final, but put together a stronger race than last week, turning in a fifth-place time of 6:56.49.

The Golden Hurricane's 10th-ranked Lightweight 8+ will take on 13th-ranked Ohio State and Georgia Tech, who is receiving votes, in the Grand Final tomorrow.
