Tulsa Rowers Pick Up Five Top Marks at UCF Invitational
April 26, 2014
Orlando, Fla. - The Tulsa rowers picked up five top marks in the first day of racing at the UCF Invitational on Saturday on Lake Pickett in Orlando, Fla. TU will conclude the regatta tomorrow.
"Today was a solid day and a good day of racing for the Tulsa rowers," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We are heading in the right direction in these last few weeks of the season and we are looking forward to racing again tomorrow to see what we can improve on from today."
In the morning races, TU faced Old Dominion in four races, as well as UCF in the 3rd Varsity 8+ event.
In the Varsity 4+, Betsy Govig, Ashley Lane, Amy Nelson, Jerusha Blankenship and Carly Schmidt topped ODU by more than four seconds, turning in times of 7:34.1 and 7:38.3, respectively. The Golden Hurricane's 2nd Varsity 4+ was third in the same race with a time of 7:52.7.
The Monarchs won the Varsity 8+ race with a time of 6:36.1, while TU trailed by two seconds. Tulsa won the 2nd Varsity 8+ race by three seconds over ODU, while the Hurricane topped UCF by seven seconds and Old Dominion by 20 seconds in the 3rd Varsity 8+.
"I thought we had really solid racing this morning," Harris said. "We raced in four events and won three of them. We didn't execute as well as we would have liked in the Varsity 8+, but the rest of the boats handled their race plans well and did something special. It is good to be ahead of a conference foe as we head into the end of the season."
In the afternoon, TU's Varsity 4+ turned in a time of 7:48.0, trailing UCF by more than six seconds (7:41.44).
Tulsa's 2nd Varsity 4+ tallied a top finish with a time of 7:44.86, nearly 14 seconds faster than Old Dominion (7:58.25), while UCF (8:03.00) and Miami (8:10.44) rounded out the race.
UCF edged TU in the Varsity 8+ with times of 6:52.98 and 6:56.17, respectively, while the Hurricane defeated the Knights in the 2nd Varsity 8+ with times of 7:01.76 and 7:07.22.
In the 3rd Varsity 8+, UCF recorded a top time of 7:19.75, Tulsa was second with a time of 7:22.75 and ODU finished third in a time of 7:33.55.
"In the afternoon we made some changes in the lineup, which is the great thing about this format, it allows us to check lineups and see that the things we are doing are correct as we head into the last three weeks," Harris said. "We raced pretty well. The Lightweight 4+ racing as the 2nd Varsity 4+ did a great job and had some really good racing. We also did well in the Varsity 4+ with the changes to the lineup and the 2nd Varsity 8+ race was great. The 2V8+ raced a solid race and showed some speed we haven't seen in the boat in the past. Again we had some disappointment with the Varsity 8+, but they have gotten stronger and it will be great to have another race against these teams tomorrow."
MORNING RACES Varsity 4+ 1. Tulsa - 7:34.1 2. Old Dominion - 7:38.3 3. Tulsa (2V4) - 7:52.7
