Tulsa's Lightweight 8+ Finishes Third at Dad Vail Regatta
May 11, 2013
Philadelphia, Pa. -The University of Tulsa's Lightweight 8+ claimed a third-place finish on Saturday afternoon at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa.
"I think both Tulsa boats had similar circumstances in that they had lineup changes this week, but I think they both did an outstanding job," Assistant Coach and Lightweight Coach Rodney Mott said. "The team put together two solid races and finished ahead of some good opponents."
TU, which is ranked ninth in the latest USRowing Lightweight 8+ poll, turned in a time of 7:13.64 behind #6 Bucknell (6:57.74) and #7 MIT (7:06.70), but ahead of #14 Purdue (7:57.02).
"In the Eight, I was impressed with the effort and overall attitude of the crew," Mott said. "We finished behind two nationally ranked teams, so even though it was disappointing to miss the automatic qualifying top two spots for the Lightweight National Championship, we made good steps toward the future."
The Hurricane's Lightweight 4+ posted a third-place time of 8:13.07 in their heat on Friday, trailing Pittsburgh (7:57.68) and Bucknell (8:04.64) and topping MIT, Bryant and Temple.
"In the Four, topping MIT was great, but we were just shy of making the final, which was our goal," Mott said. "It is a young boat so this was a good experience and something we can continue to build on for next year."
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, May 18th at the Conference USA Championship in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
