TU Rowers Earns Eight Medals at Boot of the Oklahoma

Golden Hurricane brings home five first-place finishes

Oklahoma City, Okla. - The University of Tulsa women's rowing team put together a tremendous start to the fall season today, earning eight medals, including five first-place finishes, at the Boot of the Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, Okla.

"Today was a great way to open the season," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We stepped up and achieved our goals and did well against some tough competition. We are going to enjoy this performance, but we have a lot of work to do to get even faster before the Head of the Hooch."

The TU Collegiate 8+ `A' recorded a third-place time of 14:36.02 to advance to the Stampede Grand Final. In the sprint, the Golden Hurricane started in third place, but pushed ahead to claim a gold medal in a time of 1:34.70.

Tulsa's Novice 4+ and Novice 8+ both captured gold medals in their race in times of 16:50.33 and 16:34.27, respectively, while the Lightweight Double, consisting of Susan Stangl and Heather Brooks, tallied a top time of 17:08.28 in their event and a third-place finish in the sprint.

In the Collegiate 4+, TU turned in a second-place time of 16:42.40 for a silver medal, and then earned a gold medal in the sprint.

"We made our mark and surprised some teams today," senior Jacqueline Malleo said. "This team has had a lot of improvement since my freshman year, and it is great to see how our aggression and hard work has paid off. We still have a lot of work to do, but today was a great day."

The Golden Hurricane will return to action at the Head of the Hooch on November 7-8 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
