Tulsa Rowers Record Top Finishes in Four of Six Races at Jayhawk Jamboree
Oct. 20, 2013
Lawrence, Kan. - The Tulsa rowers recorded four top marks and had 10 boats finish among the top-three at the Jayhawk Jamboree on Sunday at Burcham Park on the Kansas River in Lawrence, Kan. TU tallied first-place finishes in the Varsity 1x, Novice 4+, Varsity 4+ and Novice 8+ boats, and put a boat in the top-three in all six races the Golden Hurricane competed in.
"We had a little bit of a shaky start in the Varsity 8+, but the women recovered and learned from it," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "The women all went out in the smaller boats and were determined to get it done. I am confident in our abilities and believe it will get even better from here. The Novice's really threw down and I am especially proud of freshmen Janelle Payne and Jennifer Casson as they raced three times today and earned two first-place marks and a third-place finish. Now the team is ready to get back home and get ready for the Head of the Hooch."
In the first race of the day for TU, the women raced the Varsity 8+ to a third-place time of 16:09.15 behind Kansas (15:45.58) and Kansas State (15:58.04). The Tulsa `C' boat was fifth and the `B' boat was eighth overall in a field of 13 boats.
Next up was the Novice 8+, where the Golden Hurricane `A' crew turned in a time of 16:51.43 to claim a first-place mark, while the `B' boat finished in third place.
The Varsity 4+ race was third for Tulsa, as the `A' boat, featuring Angela Metzler, Brooke Helmberger, Jennifer Casson, Alana Bobka and Janelle Payne, captured a top finish with a time of 17:51.96, which was nearly 30 seconds faster than Kansas State. TU's `B' boat was third, the `C' boat was sixth and the `D' boat was 14th.
In the Double, Emalia Seto and Colleen Wohlrab combined for a second-place time of 19:06.47, while Amy Nelson and Kaity Swinford were third, and Liz Akin and Emily Loudenback finished fifth.
The final race of the day was the Novice 4+ and the Hurricane claimed a first, second, fifth and seventh-place finish.
Tulsa will conclude the fall season at the Head of the Hooch on Nov. 2-3 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
