Tulsa Rowers Advance Five Boats to Grand Finals at Knecht CupApril 10, 2009
Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa women's rowing team advanced five boats to tomorrow's grand finals and two boats to the petite finals on Friday afternoon at the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. "Overall it was a good day for our team," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We have come together as a team and have begun stepping up to our potential. We are a smaller team with only 40 student-athletes, but we are efficient. The women push themselves in every race, and today was a big step forward for this program." The Golden Hurricane had great success in the Fours today. TU's Novice 4+ had a first-place finish in its heat with a time of 8:24.7, and will be competing for its third-straight gold medal in the event at the Knecht Cup tomorrow. Both the Lightweight 4+ `A' and `B' boats will also be in the hunt for a medal, as they posted identical times of 8:30.5 for second and third-place finishes in their heats, respectively. The Varsity 4+ turned in top times in both its heat and semifinal to also compete in the grand final. "We have traditionally done well in the Fours at the Knecht Cup, but today we took it to a whole new level," Harris said. "Each of the Fours are intent on coming away with a medal, and the Novice 4+ has taken on the challenge of claiming its third-straight gold medal with gusto." Tulsa's Novice 8+ captured top times in both preliminary races today, turning in a time of 7:40.2 in the semifinal, which was more than 21 seconds faster than the heat. This was the first time that TU put the Novice 8+ in the finals at the Knecht Cup. TU's 13th-ranked Lightweight 8+ raced for the first time today, posting a time of 8:29.2 for fourth place in the heat. The Golden Hurricane will take on #10 Buffalo and #11 Duquesne tomorrow in the petite final. The Varsity 8+ turned in a third-place time of 7:35.5 in the semifinals, after struggling in the heat, and advanced to the petite final.
"We didn't have the race we wanted in the heat, but we went into the Varsity 8+ semifinal committed to putting together a solid race," senior Jennifer Anderson said. "We wanted to show everyone that we are Tulsa, we are here to race and we are going to push you the entire 2,000-meters. It was a great feeling coming off that water, and I couldn't ask for anything more." Novice 4+ Heat 3 1. Tulsa - 8:24.7 2. UMass `A'- 8:30.3 3. Old Dominion - 8:33.9 4. George Mason - 8:53.8 5.
