Tulsa Rowers to Compete at Two Regattas This Weekend
April 11, 2013
Tulsa, Oklahoma -The Tulsa rowers will split up this weekend as the Lightweight rowers will compete at the Knecht Cup at Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J., on April 13-14, and the Open Weight rowers will face SMU in the Lawless Cup at White Rock Lake in Dallas, Texas, on Saturday.
"The Knecht Cup is a regatta we've attended off and on the last 10 years," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We are excited to be able to send the lightweights to race such a high level of competition. We've improved a lot this season and I think we should have a good showing this weekend."
TU has not raced at the Knecht Cup since 2009, when the Hurricane advanced five boats to the Grand Final. The Varsity 4+ earned a gold medal, the Novice 4+ captured the silver medal and the Novice 8+ picked up the bronze medal, while the Lightweight `A' and `B' boats were fifth and sixth, respectively, four years ago.
"The Lawless Cup is always an important event because it has President Emeritus Dr. Lawless' name," Harris said. "Dr. Lawless was very good to athletics and the TU rowing program, and we will be forever grateful for all that he has done. We are excited to keep up the rivalry with SMU as it should be an exciting regatta."
The Golden Hurricane rowers took on SMU last season in the sixth annual Lawless Cup, capturing four top finishes. Tulsa picked up first-place marks in the Varsity 8+, which is the title race, as well as the Novice 4+, Varsity 4+ and Second Varsity 8+.
