Tulsa Rowers Set to Race at Conference USA Championships on Saturday
May 10, 2012
Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa rowing team will compete in the 2012 Conference USA Women's Rowing Championship on Saturday, May 12th, at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The team champion will be based on placement in the Varsity 4+, Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 8+ races, while TU will also compete in the Open 4+.
C-USA has three full-time members that sponsor women's rowing: SMU, Tulsa and UCF, while Alabama, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas serve as affiliate members. Host Tennessee won the team title in 2010, while Texas took home the team championship a year ago.
"Our conference is incredibly competitive," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "Familiarity breeds competition and getting to go up against a lot of our league opponents this season has made us even faster. Our boats have rowed incredibly well and have made big strides this season. I feel really good about our preparation. We are focused and looking forward to the challenge."
While the rest of the team will compete at the C-USA Championship, the Lightweight 8+ will be rowing in the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuykill River in Philadelphia, Pa. The TU crew will take on Purdue, Bucknell, Buffalo and MIT in just one trip down the river in pursuit of a bid to the IRA Lightweight National Championship in June.
"These are all very good teams," Harris said. "I know we've gotten faster, but every one of these teams is moving well this season. We have one chance to make the IRA, but we are fired up and focused, and hopefully we'll finish in the top two and earn a bid."
