TU Rowers Ready to Race at Central/South Championship and C-USA Championship This Weekend
May 14, 2010
Oak Ridge, Tennessee - The University of Tulsa women's rowing team will compete in the Central/South Rowing Championship this Saturday and Sunday, May 15-16, at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. This year, Conference USA will host its inaugural championship in conjunction with the regatta.
"We are really very excited about the opportunity to race in our first conference championship," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "TU has sponsored rowing since 1995, but now we can compete for a C-USA championship just like any other team at TU. The athletes are ready for it and excited for it. We also get the opportunity to race a lot of great crews from the Atlantic Coast, Big Ten ad Big East. Very few places can you find a regatta of this caliber with so many fast schools. We are going to go out and compete, but have a lot of fun while doing it."
C-USA will determine the 2010 winners in the Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ events according to the Central/South results. Team and individual awards will be presented at the C-USA awards ceremony following the regional regatta.
C-USA has three full-time members that sponsor women's rowing: SMU, Tulsa and UCF. Six additional programs serve as affiliate members in the league as C-USA welcomes Alabama, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Beginning in 2011, the C-USA Rowing Championship will be held as a separate event among just the nine members.
TU will race in the Open 4+ `A' and `B', Varsity 4+, Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 8+ events.
