Tulsa's Lightweight 8+ to Race at IRA National ChampionshipJune 4, 2009
Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa women's ninth-ranked Lightweight 8+ will compete at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship on Friday at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, California. In TU's Heat, which is slated for 10:00 a.m. CST, the Golden Hurricane will take on top-ranked Wisconsin, #4 Georgetown and #5 Radcliffe, while #2 Princeton, #3 Stanford, #6 Bucknell and #7 MIT will compete in the second Heat. The top two finishers in each Heat will advance to the Grand Final on Saturday, while the remaining four teams will race in the Repechage later on Friday to determine the qualifiers for the Petite Final. "These nine women have been working very hard and are looking forward to competing for a national championship," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "They are very excited, but they know it is survive and advance. They have trained well and are ready to prove that we are one of the top teams in the nation." Wisconsin is the two-time defending champion, and has won four of the last five national championships, but coxswain Abigail Gorman, Susan Stangl, Elizabeth Peterson, Emily Callen, Kellyn Smith, Kelsey Kean, Heather Brooks, Anne Campbell and Michelle Kadin are ready for the challenge. Tulsa's Lightweight 8+ has earned a gold medal at the Midwest Intercollegiate Rowing Championship, and a bronze medal at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship and the Dad Vail Regatta this season.
