Tulsa, Okla. - Pause at the Release is our periodic feature in which we highlight the perspective of one or more of our student-athletes. In these articles, the athletes share their personal experiences as part of the Golden Hurricane team with our wonderful supporters and community members. Here, you'll find the backstage story on TU Women's Rowing, told through the eyes of the athletes themselves. Check back often to see updates from more of your favorite rowers and coxswains.

Pause at the Release: Study Abroad

My time in Italy has possibly been the most eye-opening experience of my life. The exposure to brand new foods, people, lifestyles, as well as the opportunity to view some of the greatest masterpieces in the western world has broadened my global perspective in a way that I never thought possible. The few weeks I was given to travel and explore the country flew by incredibly quickly, and I can't wait for the next chance I get to do it again!

Lauren Mann, LTW, Class of 2014

I am having an awesome time in India learning all about the culture and making tons of new friends! Being here has given me the opportunity to experience first-hand all of the incredible traditions and unique customs that this country has to offer. I have loved exchanging stories about culture and beliefs with the girls I have met. Some of the other highlights of my time here have included attending a traditional Indian wedding, eating homemade hyderabadi biryani at one of my friend's homes, and playing with the local street kids. Every day is a new adventure in India and I am so grateful for the opportunity to spend the summer here!

Brooke Helmberger, OW, Class of 2014

I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to study abroad in Geneva, Switzerland this summer! The Center for Global Education and people like Christina Carter were extremely helpful and encouraging when I was going through the application process. This program has given me the opportunity to broaden my perspective on international affairs and to connect with some internationally renowned professors at the University of Geneva. I also got to visit Katie Caves (former rowing GA) who currently studies in Zurich! It has been an amazing experience so far!

Carly Schmidt, OW, Class of 2014

This summer I had the opportunity to travel to the country of Ghana, Africa, as part of a class at TU. We packed so much into the three-week trip: painted a school and played with the children there, visited the highest waterfall in West Africa, fed monkeys, toured a slave castle, visited a mental health hospital, walked through one of the biggest street markets in West Africa, and had many cultural experiences. It was so fun and exciting to be able to immerse myself in another culture, and I'm so thankful I was able to share it with my teammate, Patrizia Perazzo.
