Aug. 18, 2011
West Windsor, N.J. - Michelle Sechser, a 2008 graduate of The University of Tulsa, earned a bid onto the US National Rowing Team today by qualifying for the Pan American Games. Michelle and her teammate Chelsea Smith, rowed for the US Rowing Training Center based in Oklahoma City and won their final in a time of 7:14 over their nearest competitor, Penn AC from Philadelphia.
Sechser will represent the United States in the Lightweight Women's Double in Guzman, Mexico from October 15-19, 2011.
"Making the US National Team is an absolute dream come true," Sechser said. "Kevin Harris was the coach who first planted the idea in my head while I was rowing for the University of Tulsa and it has been full-steam ahead ever since. The training environment, work ethic, and team values that were engrained in me as a Golden Hurricane student-athlete are what helped me reach this monumental point in my rowing career."
"This is huge," Tulsa Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "She was a great leader here at TU and we are all proud of her accomplishments. We know she'll represent the USA really well now and in the future."
While at TU, Sechser helped win the Midwest Collegiate Championships twice during her career and she had multiple top-10 performances in various regattas including the Dad Vail and Head of the Charles. Sechser earned her bachelor's degree in business in 2008 and an MBA in 2010. She also won multiple scholar athlete awards. As a Graduate Assistant Coach, her 2009 Varsity 4+ won the Knecht Cup and finished second at SIRA.
