Rowing Team Suffers Setback to the Jayhawks
March 25, 2000
The University of Tulsa Crew suffered a mild setback on Saturday losing all four races to the University of Kansas. While losing the races was unfortunate, the Golden Hurricane was able to finish with some of its fastest times this season.
The tightest race was the first race of the day in the Second Varsity 8. With Kansas "B jumping out quickly at the start, set the pace for the other two boats. By the 500-meter mark, Kansas "A" had taken over the lead, while TU gained the advantage at the 1000-meter mark. Kansas "A" gained a 2/3 of a length advantage over the final 500-meters for the final margin.
In the second race of the day, the First Varsity 8, KU jumped out quickly again, establishing a half boat length lead by the 500-meter mark. TU was able to establish a better rhythm and matched KU's speed over the next 300-meters. But the lead was too much to over come for the Hurricane.
Although all three boats started together, the Kansas "A" boat began to pull away early. Having a strong lead by the 500-meter mark, the race came down to second place as TU and KU "B" were even. With KU "A", the Jayhawks "B" boat started their sprint earlier than TU, but the Hurricane used a strong current to its advantage.
The best race of the day, may have been the Novice 8s. All three boats settled into a strong rhythm from the start. All the boats were even through the 500-meter mark. As with the other three races on the day, persistence paid off for KU "A", winning by over a boat length.
The final home dual for the Golden Hurricane will be tomorrow morning Sunday, March 26 as TU hosts Kansas State at Zink Lake at 9 a.m.
