Tulsa, Okla. -
Pause at the Release is our periodic feature in which we highlight the perspective of one of our student-athletes. In these articles, the athletes share their personal experiences as part of the Golden Hurricane team with our wonderful supporters and community members. Here, you'll find the backstage story on TU Women's Rowing, told through the eyes of the athletes themselves. Check back often to see updates from more of your favorite rowers and coxswains.
The captains reflect over the past years and talk about their excitement for the upcoming season.
If someone had told me just three years ago that I would be attending a school in the United States and rowing for an NCAA Division 1 team, I never would have believed them. Born and raised in British Columbia, Canada, I am ashamed to admit that at the time, I had absolutely no idea where Oklahoma was in the U.S. It has been two years now since I first started at TU, and I now cannot imagine my life without The University of Tulsa. I have loved both seasons I have spent competing with this team, and I am incredibly excited for the potential this next year holds. This year is a huge opportunity for The University of Tulsa Women's rowing team; we have a large incoming freshman class who not only have allowed us to have the biggest roster we have ever had as a team, but who also have the potential to increase our speed and allow us to be faster than we ever have been before. The speed that we are hoping to gain will be much needed this year as we take on some strong and notoriously fast opponents, both within Conference USA and against teams from other conferences. I can't wait to see what this team does this year. I am excited to be one of the leaders of this amazing group of women and to be a part of this group as we push our team to new heights. I genuinely consider myself blessed to be a part of the rowing team here, and I know my teammates will help me accomplish my goal of making my senior year at TU my best year yet. Racing season 2012-2013, bring it on!
I have never been so excited to start the rowing season! It is crazy to think that this will be my last year competing. It went by so fast! This year we have a young, yet eager team that has shown nothing but dedication and hard work so far this season. Each year we strive for new goals and results, and I have high hopes that we will continue to accomplish our goals and reach for greater accomplishments throughout this rowing season. It is an honor to not only be a part of this team, but to be able to lead it side-by-side with Amanda Schenk
and Megan Fitzpatrick
. I cannot wait to start racing and create amazing memories with my team!
Kevin often reminds us of the mere 48 months we have to be a student athlete at The University of Tulsa. As a freshman, it seems like an eternity, but as my final 10 months begin I am reminded of how fast time goes. It's amazing to look back on the last 36 months and see how much this team has grown, from the inauguration of Conference USA, to racing teams ranked in the top 10, to the addition of multiple new boats and a team bus. As a result of this growth, we were able to recruit the largest and possibly strongest freshman class this team has seen. Within the first couple weeks their work ethic and talent has really pushed the entire team to a whole new level. With the start of 20 hours, we finally have the opportunity to put all of our training out onto the water. This is where the fun begins. I am so excited to watch this team come together in the next few months as we lay the groundwork for our spring season. I am honored to be able to lead this team with Amanda and Molly and hope to make the Golden Hurricane family proud.
