Tulsa, Okla. - Pause at the Release is our periodic feature in which we highlight the perspective of one of our student-athletes. In these articles, the athletes share their personal experiences as part of the Golden Hurricane team with our wonderful supporters and community members. Here, you'll find the backstage story on TU Women's Rowing, told through the eyes of the athletes themselves. Check back often to see updates from more of your favorite rowers and coxswains.

Rachel Buchanan on Fall Racing

Fall racing requires a different mental focus and discipline than spring racing. Fall races are more than twice as long as spring races and the boats are staggered at the start. Therefore during fall races the rowers have to dig deep and find the motivation to push away from the boats behind and catch the boats that start ahead. However, the Head of the Oklahoma is not any ordinary fall race. That is because there are night sprints!

Night sprints are especially exciting because they happen after all the 5,000m races have been completed and the top 12 finishes from particular events get to race a 500m sprint. It is awesome because not only is it another chance to race, but it happens at night and there are spot lights on the course and everyone can watch from the jumbo-tron. Our team always brings glow sticks for everyone to wear. Whether racing or cheering teammates on during the night sprints, the experience is definitely unforgettable. It is awesome to be able to feel the adrenaline that comes with a full out sprint. Our team has goals this year to qualify as many boats as possible for the night sprints this year.

I am very excited to begin this fall season and see how much speed we have gained as a team since last year.

I am so appreciative of the fact that I get to do what I love with my teammates, my family. I couldn't ask for a better group of girls to start my senior year of racing than the girls that are on this team that I am proud to be a part of it.
