Bermel Tallies First Career Goal in 1-0 Win Over Southern Miss
Oct. 4, 2013
Hattiesburg, Miss. -
Tulsa freshman Lana Bermel scored her first career goal and gave the Golden Hurricane a 1-0 win over Southern Miss on Friday evening at the Bell Soccer Complex in Hattiesburg, Miss. TU moved to 8-3-1 on the season and 2-0-1 in Conference USA, while USM fell to 6-4-3 overall and 0-2-1 in the league.
"Anytime you can get three points in Conference USA it is a big day, and to do it on the road is even better," Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. "We came in focused and created some good chances early on, but we were a bit unlucky. The girls didn't panic, which I worried we would do, they just kept playing, created more good opportunities and played really well."
Tulsa's goal came in the 58th minute as Roman Edwards crossed the ball to the top of the box and Bermel had a one-touch finish to net the Hurricane goal.
"We had a nice combination play," Cussen said. "Bradi Hinch cleared space, Roman played it to the top of the box and Lana came through with a nice goal. Tori Peters also did a good job for us defensively. She helped squash the counter-attack and did some things today that stood out but don't show up on the score sheet."
TU had a 19-3 lead in shots, including an 11-0 advantage in shots on goal, and an 8-2 lead in corner kicks.
Jordan O'Brien led the Hurricane attack with six shots, while Bermel added four attempts and Lindsay Kirch had three shots. Hayley Harryman logged all 90 minutes between the posts and earned her seventh shutout on the season.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 6th against Rice. Game time is set for 3:00 pm and will be broadcast live on FOX SportSouth.
