Oct. 6, 2013
Houston, Texas -
Alexa Sidorakis scored the game-winner to give Tulsa a 1-0 victory over Rice on Sunday afternoon at the Rice Soccer Stadium in Houston, Texas. TU moved to 9-3-1 on the season and 3-0-1 in Conference USA, while the Owls fell to 4-5-2 overall and 2-2 in the league.
"Anytime you get a win in this league is a big deal, but to win on the road and sweep this weekend was great," Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. "I am proud of the team. They played with a lot of heart today. We hit the post four times and created a number of good opportunities to score, but we also pride ourselves on our shutouts and team defense and today we got our fifth-straight shutout. The back and midfield did a fantastic job today and hopefully we can continue to play the way we've been playing this weekend."
Sidorakis scored her first goal of the season and the third of her career off a pass from Annette Sohmer at the 37:37 mark to give TU it's first win over Rice since 2009.
Jordan O'Brien led the Golden Hurricane attack with five shots, while Caitlin Jancuska, Claire Nicholson, Bradi Hinch, Kajal Parmar and Sohmer each had two attempts. Hayley Harryman logged all 90 minutes between the posts, had five saves and recorded her fifth-straight shutout and eighth of the season.
Tulsa had a 19-10 lead in shots, while both teams had five shots on goal, and the Owls took a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, October 12th against Colorado College. Game time is set for 12 noon at Stewart Field in Colorado Springs, Colo.
