Tulsa Women's Soccer Team Tops Southern Miss in Double Overtime, 2-1
Oct. 24, 2008
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Senior Rachel Robinson scored the game-winning goal for Tulsa, giving TU a 2-1 victory over Southern Miss on Friday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Golden Hurricane moved to 7-8-3 on the season and 2-5-2 in Conference USA, while the Golden Eagles fell to 5-11-1 overall and 1-8 in the league.
"After a scoreless first half, we made some adjustments," Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. "We didn't adapt well at first, but we stayed with it and Sarah got the goal to tie the game. I pulled our central back, Rachel, to forward in overtime and she scored. She did what we expect out of our senior captain, stepped up and fought for the win."
Amy Skeet put Southern Miss on the board in the 48th minute to take a 1-0 lead, which the Eagles would hold on to for nearly 37 minutes, but at the 84:05 mark Sarah Greene headed in a ball played by Jennifer Kacergis to tie it up and force overtime. Kacergis set up the game-winning goal by Robinson at the 101:14 mark.
This was Tulsa's sixth overtime game this season, with the Golden Hurricane going 1-2-3 in those contests.
"It was great to get an overtime win," Cussen said. "We have been here five other times this season, and I told them to play as if it was the final 10 minutes of the season. They wanted the win and I am very proud of them for coming together and fighting for the `w'."
Southern Miss had a 17-7 advantage in shots, as well as an 8-3 lead in shots on goal. Kendall Harclerode logged all 101:14 in goal and picked up seven saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, as the Hurricane hosts UCF beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium.
