Tulsa Advances to Semifinals of C-USA Women's Soccer Championship
Oct. 31, 2012
Tulsa, Oklahoma - Tulsa's fifth-seeded women's soccer team earned a 1-0 overtime win over fourth-seeded East Carolina in the Conference USA Championship quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon at University Field in El Paso, Texas. This marks the first time that the Golden Hurricane has advanced in the C-USA Championship since joining the league in 2005. TU moved to 12-5-3 on the year, while the Pirates concluded their season at 10-7-3 overall. "East Carolina is a well-coached, hard-working team," Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. "We knew it was going to be a battle because we tied them 0-0 earlier this season, but we kept fighting and creating chances. I am proud of the way we fought and the fact that we are doing something no other Tulsa team has done before, which is play in the semifinals." Both the first and second frames ticked off the clock with no score, but Rebecca Handley netted her eighth goal on the year and fourth in as many games as she headed in a corner kick taken by Jordan O'Brien. Her game-winner was scored at the 95:48 mark. O'Brien had a team-best three shots, while Lexis Learmonth, Claire Hulcer, Roman Edwards, Claire Nicholson and Stephanie Aitken each had two attempts, and four others had one shot. Hayley Harryman logged all 90 minutes between the posts, picked up two saves and earned her fourth shutout on the year. Both teams had 17 shots, while Tulsa had a 6-2 lead in shots on goal and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Tulsa will face top-seeded Colorado College in the C-USA Championship semifinals on Friday beginning at 5:30 pm Central. Scoring Summary Tulsa 0 0 1 - 1 ECU 0 0 0 - 0
