Twellman Powers Tulsa Past SMS, TU Ties Drury:
Tulsa began the week in Springfield, Mo., against Drury College. The Panthers and Hurricane each scored one goal in the first half, but neither team could find the net for the next 75 mintes and settled for a 1-1 tie. TU junior Melissa McCormick (Omaha, Neb.) scored TU's lone goal.
Tulsa concluded the week with its first home game this past Sunday. Sophomore forward Julie Twellman (Columbia, Mo.) recorded her first career hat trick with a three-goal performance in Tulsa's 4-0 victory over Southwest Missouri State. All three of her goals came in the first half in a span of just 21 minutes. Melissa McCormick scored TU's first goal against SMS, the goal was her third of the season.
Up Next for the Hurricane:
Tulsa (3-1-1) plays its second home game of the season this Friday at 7:30 p.m. when the Hurricane faces cross-town rival Oral Roberts (4-2) in the fourth annual Mazzio's T-Town Shootout at McAuliffe Field. TU leads the overall series 9-0-1. Last season, Julie Davidson (St. Charles, Mo.) nailed the game-winning goal in double overtime to secure the win for Tulsa.
On Sunday, Sept. 17, TU begins a four-game road trip in Lubbock, Texas, against Texas Tech (1-5). The game will begin at 1:00 p.m. The series is tied at 1-1. TU won the first game of the series, 4-0, in 1995, while the Red Raiders claimed a 3-0 victory in the 1996 season opener.
Tulsa Receives Top-25 Votes for Second Straight Week:
In the latest American Soccer Writers' NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Top-25 poll, Tulsa received two votes for consideration to be ranked among the nation's top-25 teams. Last week, TU received one vote for top-25 consideration. Western Athletic Conference rival SMU is ranked No. 19. Tulsa and SMU are the only two teams from the WAC to receive a ranking or a vote in this week's poll.
TU Remains Among Central Region's Top-10:
For the third straight week, Tulsa is ranked ninth among the Central Region's top-10 teams. Tulsa has been ranked since the first week of the season. A total of three teams from the Central Region are nationally ranked including Nebraska, Texas A&M and SMU.
Hurricane Looks for Big 12 Sweep Against Texas Tech:
The Hurricane will look to complete a sweep of the Big 12 teams on its schedule this season when it battles Texas Tech on Sunday. Tulsa has already posted shutout victories over Big 12 members Oklahoma (2-0) and Oklahoma State (5-0) this season.
Missouri Connection Paying Off for Tulsa:
Tulsa's 2000 roster features six players from the state of Missouri. Of the six, five are among TU's top scorers this season. The Hurricane's top scorer, Julie Twellman with 12 points, hails from Columbia, Mo., while seniors Kelly Noonan, Julie Davidson, sophomore Liz Benoist, and freshman Emily Trost hail from the St. Louis area. Sophomore Tracy Artis (O'Fallon, Mo.) has played in just two games this season, but was the only freshman in 1999 to start every game.
Kelly Noonan picked up her 11th career assist in TU's 4-0 win over Southwest Missouri State and moved into a three-way tie for eighth place with former Hurricane standouts Amy Edwards (1998-91) and Amber Farr (1995-98).
With 39 career points (14g/11a) Kelly Noonan is tied with former TU player Lori Morrow (1992-95) for 10th place among the school's career scoring leaders.
Tulsa's goalkeeping tandem of freshman Pam Devore (Derby, Kan.) and junior Corinne Bowman (Union Springs, N.Y.) have a combined 0.56 goals-against-average, 36 saves and three shutouts between them.
