Softball Drops First Game to Louisville, 4-1
Feb. 12, 2011
AUSTIN, Texas - The Tulsa softball team dropped its first game Saturday against Louisville, 4-1, in the Texas Classic at McCombs Field. The two teams play again in the tournament semifinals at 4 p.m.
Sophomore shortstop Samantha Cobb hit an RBI single up the middle for the lone Golden Hurricane (1-2) run. Sophomore Lacey Middlebrooks (0-1) took the loss for TU after pitching 5.0 innings and allowing four runs. Chelsea Leonard (1-0) pitched five innings and picked up the win for the Cardinals (2-1).
"We're not very disciplined on the strike zone. We swing at too many balls outside of the zone. I saw some signs at the end of the game where we took a little better approach. We look forward to the game where we put it all together, and when we do we'll take some pressure off of our pitching and defense," Tulsa Head Coach John Bargfeldt said.
TU went without a base runner for the first four innings, before sophomore catcher Cassidy Bowen drew a leadoff walk and sophomore first baseman Keri Leach laid down a bunt single in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Hurricane did not get on the scoreboard until the sixth inning when Cobb's single drove home freshman Shelby Blanton, who came on as a pinch runner. Junior second baseman Skylar Swanson drew a leadoff walk in the sixth, moved to second on a single up the middle by sophomore center fielder Caitlin Everett, and to third on a ground out.
Louisville got three runs in the fourth inning and added one more in the fifth. The Cardinals scored three in the fourth on a wild pitch, an RBI single, and an RBI double. Another one-run single in the fifth inning gave Louisville a, 4-0, lead.
Senior Jordan Kinard came on in relief for TU, throwing scoreless sixth and seventh innings.
