COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Cierra Hughes went 4-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored on the day to lead the Tulsa softball team to wins over McNeese State, 5-4 (8 inn.), and Oregon State, 9-1 (6 inn.), to begin the Aggie Classic Friday at the Aggie Softball Complex.

With the two wins, the Golden Hurricane improved to 6-1 on the season. Senior Aimee Creger (2-0) struck out 14 batters and allowed just two hits in the 9-1 win over Oregon State. Junior Bailey Erwin went the distance in the eight-inning win over McNeese State to improve her record to 3-0.

Tulsa opened the day with a come-from-behind extra-inning win over McNeese State (3-3). TU trailed 3-0 after three innings, and tied the game with two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth inning. The Hurricane outscored McNeese State 2-1 in the eighth with International Tiebreaker rule in effect to win, 5-4.

The Golden Hurricane jumped on Oregon State (3-5) early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first in response to a single run scored by the Beavers in the top of the inning. TU added a run in the fourth inning, and sophomore Jocelyn Sheffield hit a three-run home run in the sixth to end the game by run rule, 9-1.

McNeese State scored two runs in the first inning and one in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Only one of the runs in the first was earned. Tulsa got on the board in the top of the fourth with RBI hits by junior first baseman Julie Kernen and Hughes.

Junior catcher Erica Sampson walked and scored on a double by Kernen. Hughes then drove home Kernen on a two-out bunt single. In the sixth, TU tied the score when freshman Jill Roye drilled a pinch hit single up the middle, scoring Hughes.

In the top of the eighth, Hughes doubled down the left field line with one out, scoring Brittany Walker, who was inserted to start the inning on second base. With two out, senior Jill Barrett singled through the right side to score Hughes and give TU a 5-3 lead. The Cowgirls added a run on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning. Erwin allowed just two earned runs and three hits, and struck out four batters.

Against Oregon State, the Beavers took the lead in the top of the first after a pair of walks and an RBI single. Creger recorded strikeouts for all three outs in the inning, and held OSU to a single hit for the remainder of the game.

Barrett and senior second baseman Shelby Blanton hit consecutive base hits to begin the bottom of the first, and Roye in the DP role, loaded the bases with a one-out single to right. Kernen hit a sacrifice fly to right, and following an error Hughes doubled home two runs. Maggie Withee singled home the fifth run of the inning, making the score 5-1.

TU added a run in the fourth when Blanton and Sampson hit back-to-back doubles, the second driving home Blanton. Sophomore Kaitlin Allen hit a pinch hit double, followed by a single from Barrett, and sophomore Jocelyn Sheffield blasted a pinch-hit homer into the wind to left center to put Tulsa ahead 9-1 and end the game.

The Golden Hurricane will face the same two teams on Saturday, playing Oregon State at 10 a.m., and McNeese State at 12:15 p.m. TU concludes the tournament against No. 8 Texas A&M at 12:15 p.m. Sunday.
