San Diego, Calif. - The University of Tulsa softball team lost a pair of heartbreakers on Sunday, losing to Indiana, 7-6 and UC-Santa Barbara, 3-2 on the final day of the Campbell/Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State. Against Indiana, TU scored first with three runs in the second inning, with all three runs coming with two outs. Junior Brooke Smart was TU's first runner by drawing a walk. She would later score after back-to-back singles by sophomore Ashlee Lubniewski and freshman Kelly Chapman. Sophomore Vanessa Vice was hit by a pitch to load the bases, followed by consecutive singles from junior Stephanie Chomicki and senior Sara Dyer to score Lubniewski and Chapman. The Hoosiers cut into TU's lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third. The Golden Hurricane added to its lead with two more runs in the top of the fourth. Chapman drew a one-out walk, then scored on a triple by Vice. Chomicki's second hit of the game scored Vice to give TU a 5-2 advantage. Indiana posted a second home run to cut the deficit to 5-3 in the fourth inning. That is when the Hoosier bats really caught fire. After posting only two hits in the first four innings, IU recorded six hits in the final three stanzas, including three doubles and a home run. After Indiana tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth inning, TU regained the lead with a run in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Lauren Lindsay singled up the middle to open the inning, then later scored on a wild pitch for a 6-5 TU lead. However, IU bounced back with a two-out, two-run walk off home run for the win.
Against the Gauchos, UCSB drew the first run by scoring in the first inning. Tulsa tied the game at 1-1 in the second frame. Smart again drew a walk, then scored on single from senior Lindsey Tower. UCSB retook the lead in the third, then added an insurance run in the fourth. Tulsa cut into the UCSB lead in the sixth inning. Dyer reached on a fielding error to start the TU half inning. A single by Lindsay gave TU a pair of runners. Another error by UCSB on a grounder from Smart scored Dyer and advanced the tying run to third base with only one out. However, that would be all the runs TU would score. The Hurricane also had the tying run in scoring position in the seventh inning after a pair of two-out walks. Tulsa, now 3-6 on the season, opens its home schedule on Thursday by hosting the Holiday Inn Select-Tulsa Festival at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex. Tulsa will host squads from Central Arkansas, Eastern Illinois, Missouri State, North Dakota State and Valparaiso. The first game of the tournament will be on Thursday night between TU and Valpo. A full slate of games will continue on Friday and Saturday, with the tournament concluding with a trio of contests on Sunday. |
