BOCA RATON, Fla. - Junior Skylar Swanson went 2-for-2 with a home run to lead the Tulsa softball team to a, 3-0, shutout of Penn State Sunday afternoon in the FAU Kick-Off Classic at FAU Softball Stadium.

The Golden Hurricane (5-5) scored three runs on eight hits and held Penn State scoreless on four hits. Sophomore Lacey Middlebrooks got the win for TU, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing four hits with five strikeouts and five walks. Jackie Hill took the loss for the Nittany Lions after allowing three runs on seven hits.

"We had a very good weekend," Tulsa Head Coach John Bargfeldt said. "I felt like all weekend we were getting better. We got better on offense, our defense was good for the most part, and our pitching was great. We allowed only eight runs in five games."

Hurricane pitchers threw 19 straight shutout innings to close the weekend, after allowing four runs in the first two innings to Michigan on Saturday.

Sophomore center fielder Caitlin Everett went 3-for-3 in the game, while freshman designated player Aimee Creger and sophomore catcher Cassidy Bowen each drove in a run.

The Golden Hurricane scored its first run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI groundout by Creger. Freshman third baseman Jill Barrett, who had reached base on a single through the right side, scored on the play.

TU got another run in the third inning on an RBI single through the left side by Bowen, which scored sophomore shortstop Samantha Cobb. Cobb reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and moved to third base on a base hit by Creger.

Swanson capped the scoring with a solo home run to left field.

Penn State had the bases loaded three times in the game, but each time Middlebrooks was able to get out of trouble. The Nittany Lions had the bases loaded with two outs in the first, third and fourth innings. Middlebrooks then got a strikeout, a ground out back to the circle, and a ground out to shortstop to end the respective innings.

In the fourth inning, Cobb made the final out by fielding a ground ball deep in the hole between third base and shortstop and threw out the runner at first base.

The Golden Hurricane plays next weekend at the UT Arlington Invitational, beginning with a game against Creighton at 1 p.m. Friday.
