ARLINGTON, Texas - The 19th-ranked Tulsa softball team opened the UT Arlington Classic with a pair of wins on Friday, defeating UT Arlington, 5-1, and Lamar, 7-4, at Allan Saxe Field.

Five different players drove in runs for the Golden Hurricane (13-4) against UT Arlington, including junior third baseman Jill Barrett, who was 3-for-4 with a home run. Junior outfielder Haley Henshaw had two of Tulsa's 10 hits and scored twice. Junior Aimee Creger (7-1) struck out nine and allowed four hits and walked one in a complete-game win. UTA starter Teri Lyles pitched a complete game and took the loss for the Mavericks.

Freshman Caitlin Sill (1-2) picked up her first collegiate victory in the circle with a five-inning start against Lamar. Senior Lacey Middlebrooks pitched a shutout in the final 2.0 innings to earn her first save of the season.

Redshirt freshman left fielder Jodi Edmison was 2-for-3 with three RBI, and senior center fielder Caitlin Everett went 3-for-4 with a run. TU scored a run in the third inning, and six runs over the final three frames, while the Cardinals scored all four runs in the fifth inning. Lamar reliever Tina Schulz took the loss.

The Hurricane got on the board first against UTA with one run in the second inning on an RBI fielder's choice by senior catcher Cassidy Bowen that scored Henshaw, who had led off with a double. Barrett hit her first home run of the season in the third inning, and senior designated player Lacey Middlebrooks drove home senior shortstop Samantha Cobb with a double in the same frame.

Junior left fielder Cierra Hughes tripled to lead off the fourth, and scored on a double by senior center fielder Caitlin Everett. Henshaw led off the fifth inning with a triple, and scored on an RBI ground out by junior second baseman Shelby Blanton.

UTA scored its run in the bottom of the seventh on a leadoff solo homer by Lyles.

Tulsa got the scoring started against Lamar when Blanton drove home Kernen in the second inning with a triple. The Golden Hurricane added three runs in the fourth on a bases-clearing triple by Edmiston. Her big hit scored Kernen, Blanton, and freshman catcher Catherine Horner, who singled, doubled and walked, respectively, to load the bases.

Lamar knotted the score at 4-4 in the top of the fifth with a pair of two-run home runs by first baseman Ashley McDowell and center fielder Candyce Carter.

Middlebrooks put Tulsa back in the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run, her second of the season.

The Hurricane added two more runs for insurance in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-4. Barrett bunted for a single, scoring Edmiston, who reached on a one-out base hit, and Cobb hit a sacrifice fly to plate Everett, who reached on a single.

The Golden Hurricane plays Creighton at 11 a.m. Saturday, before the tournament breaks into bracket play Saturday afternoon. TU will play in a semifinal at either 3 p.m. or 5 p.m.
