March 14, 2013
TULSA, Okla. -
The No. 21 Tulsa softball team, led by a six-run second inning explosion, surged past Indiana State, 8-1, on Thursday at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
The Golden Hurricane (20-5) will step back into conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Memphis.
Freshman Caitlin Sill (2-2) went the distance for the Golden Hurricane scattering six hits with three strikeouts while allowing no earned runs and only one walk.
"She has been working real hard," commented Head Coach John Bargfeldt. "She has been trying to pitch on the edges more, and she did a great job of that today. She stayed out of the middle of the plate, and that helped out. I was glad to see her dig herself out of a jam. She did a good job inducing some ground balls, and I think she did a good job."
Three TU players smashed homeruns against the Sycamores as second baseman Shelby Blanton hit a three-run homerun out to left center in the second inning. Designated player Lacey Middlebrooks and first baseman Julie Kernen each had solo jacks for the Hurricane.
Middlebrooks, Kernen, Blanton and catcher Cassidy Bowen each had two hits apiece for TU. Middlebrooks and Kernen each had two runs for the Hurricane, while Blanton recorded three RBIs, all off of her home run.
14 different Golden Hurricane players made appearances in the ball game, as the Hurricane improved to 5-0 on the season at home.
"We usually play well at home," Bargfeldt said. "It's nice that we were able to do that again. We got our bats going pretty quick. That helps put our pitcher a little bit at ease, so I think it was important for us to get on the board first."
