HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The 20th-ranked Tulsa softball team swept its Conference USA doubleheader at Marshall, 13-1 (5 inn.) and 4-2, Saturday at Dot Hicks Field.

The Golden Hurricane improved to 23-3, and 2-0 in C-USA play, while the Thundering Herd fell to 6-17 and 1-4 in league play.

In Game 1, senior Aimee Creger (10-1) struck out nine batters in 4.0 innings and allowed one run on one hit to earn the win. Sophomore Caitlin Sill (6-2) tossed 5.0 innings in Game 2, allowing one run on three hits, and striking out eight batters. Junior Bailey Erwin worked in both games. She pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts in Game 1, and 2.0 innings allowing a run on two hits in Game 2.

The teams conclude the series with a single game at 11 a.m. CT Sunday.

In Game 1, senior shortstop Jill Barrett went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs, junior left fielder Erica Sampson was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs, sophomore Jodi Edmiston hit a two-run double, junior Julie Kernen hit a two-run home run, and senior center fielder Cierra Hughes scored twice to lead the Hurricane.

Tulsa scored twice in the first inning and five runs in the second. Edmiston's double gave the Hurricane a 2-0 lead, while Barrett, Sampson and freshman first baseman Jill Roye each had RBI singles in the second inning.

 

 

Marshall scored a run in the first, and the Hurricane added two runs in the fourth and four more in the top of the fifth. Kernen homered in the fifth inning, while freshmen Maddie Withee and Maggie Withee each drove in a run in the frame.

In Game 2, the Golden Hurricane scored one run in each of the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, while Marshall scored in the fifth and sixth frames.

Hughes and Roye each hit solo home runs, sophomore catcher Catherine Horner hit an RBI single in the second, and senior second baseman Shelby Blanton tripled home a run in the fifth. Hughes' homer came in the fourth inning, and was the first of her career. Roye homered in the sixth inning.
