LAS VEGAS - The 18th-ranked Tulsa softball team picked up a pair of wins to open the UNLV Rebel Classic, defeating Texas Tech, 5-1, and UNLV, 13-1 (5 inn.), Friday at Eller Media Stadium.

With the wins, the Golden Hurricane improved to 25-5 on the season. TU plays UNLV Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Aimee Creger (13-1) struck out 11 batters, scattered six hits, and walked one in the complete-game victory against Texas Tech. Samantha Cobb went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Cierra Hughes was 2-for-3 and scored a run in the game.

Against UNLV, the Hurricane exploded for five runs in the third and eight runs in the fourth inning, as nine different TU players scored a run in the contest. Lacey Middlebrooks struck out four batters and allowed three hits to improve to 10-2 on the season.

Cobb doubled twice against Texas Tech, including a two-run two-bagger in the third inning that put Tulsa ahead, 2-1.

Julie Kernen, Hughes and Shelby Blanton all singled to load the bases for TU in the fourth inning. Caitlin Everett drove home Kernen on a groundout to second, Hughes scored on an illegal pitch, and Jill Barrett singled to plate Blanton.

The Red Raiders struck in the first inning on an RBI double by first baseman Sandy James. Creger and the Hurricane defense allowed just one baserunners past second base the rest of the game.

Tulsa and UNLV played two scoreless frames before the visitors' middle-innings explosion.

Catherine Horner got the inning started with a double, Hughes singled, and Horner scored on a single by Everett. Cobb and Henshaw sandwiched a pair of one-out singles around a walk by Middlebrooks to make the score 3-0. Cobb scored on a bases-loaded walk by Kernen, and Henshaw went home on a walk by Horner.

In the fourth inning, TU scored eight runs on three hits, three errors, three walks and a hit batter. Barrett provided the biggest hit with a bases-loaded triple that provided the final three runs of the inning. Cassidy Bowen and Everett also had hits and drove in runs in the inning. Middlebrooks, Henshaw and Bowen all had RBI, as all of Tulsa's runs in the inning were unearned.
