BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Tulsa softball team scored 10 runs on 19 hits in two games to sweep a doubleheader from Indiana, 3-0 and 7-5, Saturday afternoon at the IU Softball Field.

Senior Brooke Smart went 3-for-5 with a double, three runs and two RBI, while fellow senior Stephanie Chomicki was 4-for-7 with an RBI and a run to lead the Golden Hurricane (28-14). Junior Jackie Lawrence pitched a three-hit shutout in the first game to earn the win and move to 12-4 on the season. Sophomore Jordan Kinard pitched four innings of relief to get the win in the second game, and she now holds a 10-5 record this season.

"We accomplished what we needed to this weekend," Tulsa Head Coach John Bargfeldt said. "We got to play and our players swung the bat well. We avoided a long layoff before we play again Tuesday. Jackie had a pretty dominating performance pitching. She walked the first batter of the game and didn't walk anybody after that. She was pitching basically in front of a home crowd for the first time ever. We gave Kelly (Chapman) a shot and she hit a two-run homer. (Lauren) Menke played good left field so Brooke could catch. A few girls stepped up where we needed them. It was a good trip for us."

Pitching in her home state, Indianapolis native Jackie Lawrence pitched a three-hit shutout in the first contest, striking out 10 batters for the second straight start. She allowed just three hits and one walk.

Tulsa scored its first runs in the second inning when Timmons hit a two-run homer down the left field line, also scoring Smart who had left off the inning with a walk. The Hurricane picked up its third run in the third inning when Menke reached second on a two-base fielding error by the center fielder. She moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Yarmer singled to third base.

Tulsa scored seven runs on 12 hits in the second game, putting up three in the second inning and two in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Smart led off the second with a single through the right side, and designated player Kelly Chapman hit into a fielder's choice but Smart advanced all the way to third base on a throwing error by the third baseman. Center fielder Jessica Stoelke bunted and the third baseman picked up the ball, checked Smart at third and looked to first, but could not make a play, loading the bases.

Senior third baseman Stephanie Chomicki singled up the middle, scoring Smart. Freshman second baseman Skylar Swanson hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Chapman to move home. Stoelke was forced out at home on a fielder's choice, and with two outs Menke singled into left field, driving home Chomciki.

In the fifth, Smart led off with a single to left field and Chapman followed with a two-run blast to left.

To begin the sixth inning, junior right fielder Lauren Lindsay and senior shortstop Kailey Yarmer sandwiched singles to left field around a pop out and junior first baseman Vanessa Vice reached on a fielder's choice where no runner was put out, loading the bases. Smart then doubled to left center, scoring Lindsay and Yarmer and giving TU a 7-2 lead.

Indiana scored two in the third on a two-run double by right fielder Jennifer Glueckert, off of TU starter Katie Lee. The Hoosiers picked up two more runs in the fifth when center fielder Kelli Ritchison scored on a ground out by catcher Bridget Langan. Shortstop Emily Bergeson, who advanced to third on the ground out, scored on a passed ball to make the score 5-4 in favor of Tulsa. The final IU run came on a solo home run by Bergeson in the seventh inning.

The Golden Hurricane plays host to Kansas in a doubleheader Tuesday, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex. Tickets for TU softball home games are $6 for adults and $4 for youth high school and younger, and can be purchased in person at the TU Athletics Ticket Office, by calling (918) 631-GoTU, or on the web by visiting www.TulsaHurricane.com.
