Softball Splits Doubleheader with UAB Friday
April 22, 2011
TULSA, Okla. - The Tulsa softball team won close, 2-1, over UAB in game one of Friday's doubleheader, but its comeback fell short in game two, as the Golden Hurricane dropped a 7-6 decision at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.
Saturday's series finale has been moved up to 11 a.m. to avoid inclement weather. TU will honor its seniors in a ceremony following the game.
In game one, freshman left fielder Shelby Blanton hit a two-run home run - her first of the season - and freshman Aimee Creger (18-2) struck out nine in a complete game effort to lead the Golden Hurricane (26-12, 15-5 C-USA) to a 2-1 win.
The Hurricane comeback fell just short in game two, as Tulsa nearly overcame a six-run deficit in the final three innings, but fell, 7-6. The Hurricane scored five runs over the final three innings, including a two-run home run by freshman third baseman Jill Barrett in the bottom of the seventh.
TU trailed UAB, 7-1, in the fifth inning when lightning moved into the area causing a one hour-fifteen minute weather delay.
After the delay in the top of the fifth, which came with two on and two outs as the Blazers had scored four runs on six hits, Tulsa stopped the bleeding by getting a ground out, stranding the two baserunners. In the bottom of the inning, the Golden Hurricane came out swinging and scored three runs to close the gap to 7-4.
Senior first baseman Kelly Chapman followed sophomore catcher Cassidy Bowen's leadoff walk with a single, and sophomore center fielder Caitlin Everett loaded the bases with a bunt single. Barrett singled back to the pitcher, scoring Bowen.
Sophomore shortstop Samantha Cobb drove home Chapman with a sacrifice fly to right field, but the throw from right sailed toward TU's third base dugout, allowing Everett to score.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Everett singled deep in the hole at short to lead off the seventh, and Barrett followed with her second home run of the season, a shot down the right field line that stayed just inside the foul pole, making the score, 7-6. That, however, is where the scoring ended, as UAB reliever Leigh Streetman got three fly outs around a walk to end the game. Streetman picked up her sixth save of the season.
TU starter Jordan Kinard (8-6) pitched 3.0 frames before leaving the game, and took the loss after allowing the Blazers' first run in the second inning. Lacey Middlebrooks came on in relief for the final 4.0 innings. When UAB pulled away with six runs in the fourth and fifth innings, she came back after the weather delay and allowed just two hits and a walk to keep the Hurricane in the game during its comeback bid.
UAB (33-14, 13-4 C-USA) starter Alisha Smith (9-3) earned the win, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing four earned runs before giving way to Streetman in the sixth.
Tulsa's first run came in the fourth inning when Creger singled up the middle, scoring Cobb from second base.
UAB scored a run in the second inning, two more in the fourth, and added four in the fifth on five singles and a double. In the second, second baseman Lauren Webster doubled home catcher Mandy Lowman, who reached on a single. In the fourth, two singles, a fielder's choice, a walk and a pair of TU errors allowed two runs to come home.
