Softball's Lawrence Earns C-USA Pitcher of the Week Honor
April 13, 2009
TULSA, Okla. - Last week junior pitcher Jackie Lawrence led The University of Tulsa softball team to three wins, earning two victories and a save in three dominating appearances, and for her efforts she was named the Conference USA co-Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
She earned the victory at Wichita State on Wednesday and in the second game of the doubleheader against UAB Friday. She also earned a save in Tulsa's win over UAB to close the series. For the week, Lawrence went 2-0 with a save, and allowed eight hits, two runs, neither of which was earned, only two walks and she struck out 20 batters in 14.2 innings.
"Jackie pitched the type of games that make the game look a lot easier for us," Tulsa Head Coach John Bargfeldt said. "She gave up very few hits, but the thing she was most proud about was giving up no walks. She had a 10 strikeout, no walk game. Since the Border War game (against Arkansas), she's had a lot more work, and has gone out and really had a focused effort. All week she didn't give up an earned run, so (this honor) was very deserving of the type of efforts she put in last week."
At Wichita State, Lawrence pitched a one-hit shutout, walking two and striking out nine batters in the Hurricane's 8-0 win. She started the second game of the doubleheader against UAB on Friday, and threw a complete game, allowing six hits and two unearned runs. She walked zero and struck out 10 batters in 7.0 innings, to lead Tulsa to a 3-2 victory. Besides a two-run third inning in this game, Lawrence allowed opposing batters nothing in her two starts.
To cap off the week, Lawrence came on in relief in the third game of the series against UAB with a 7-5 lead, a runner in scoring position, and the tying run at the plate. She gave up just one infield single, then struck out the next batter and coaxed the final into a groundout back to the circle. Tulsa then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game on run rule, 13-5.
