No. 19 Softball Opens C-USA Championship Thursday

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The 19th-ranked and top-seeded Tulsa softball team opens the 2014 Conference USA Championship against eighth-seeded Charlotte at 3 p.m. CT Thursday at FAU Softball Stadium.
The Golden Hurricane, which is 47-7 overall, earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament by virtue of its 19-4 C-USA record and regular season championship, its fifth in nine years. The 49ers posted a 20-28 overall regular season record and finished 10-13 in C-USA play. TU has won 10 of its last 12 games overall, and has posted a 26-6 record this season in games at road or neutral sites.

Tulsa is ranked No. 19 in both the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 and the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 polls released May 6.
TU and Charlotte met in Tulsa during the regular season, and the Hurricane swept the 49ers by scores of 7-0, 9-0 and 10-1, on March 22-23. Thursday's game will be the sixth meeting between the two teams. The first two contests in the series were played in 2002, as Tulsa claimed 2-0 and 3-2 neutral-site victories.
Tulsa hits .333 (492-for-1477) with 306 RBI, 337 runs, 76 doubles, 17 triples and 54 home runs, and has a .517 slugging percentage and a .413 on-base percentage with 185 walks. The Hurricane has a 1.58 team ERA with 411 strikeouts, 140 walks, 236 hits, 109 runs and 81 earned runs allowed, and has a .184 opponent batting average.
The Golden Hurricane is led in hitting by senior shortstop Jill Barrett, who has a .453 (87-for-192) batting average with 51 runs scored, seven doubles, 26 RBI, a .578 slugging percentage and a .498 OBP. Freshman third baseman Maggie Withee is hitting .346 (45-for-130) with 26 runs, 12 RBI, three doubles, three triples and a .384 OBP. Freshman DP Jill Roye hits .346 (36-for-104) with 15 runs, 32 RBI, a .558 slugging and a .438 OBP. Sophomore catcher Catherine Horner is hitting .339 (40-for-118) with 30 RBI, 20 runs, eight doubles, six homers, a .559 slugging and a .423 OBP. Senior center fielder Cierra Hughes hits .331 (46-for-139) with 34 runs, five doubles, three triples, five homers, 33 RBI, 29 walks, a .518 slugging percentage and a .444 OBP. Junior first baseman Julie Kernen is hitting .316 (42-for-133) with 39 RBI, 23 runs, 16 doubles, seven home runs, a .594 slugging and a .405 OBP. Junior catcher Erica Sampson hits .327 (52-for-159) with 35 RBI, 45 runs, eight doubles, 10 homers, 27 walks, a .566 slugging and a .455 OBP. Senior right fielder Haley Henshaw is hitting .326 (45-for-138) with 33 RBI, 27 runs, seven doubles, seven homers, a .558 slugging and a .400 OBP.
In the circle, senior Aimee Creger is 24-1 with a 1.34 ERA in 172.0 innings, and has allowed 80 hits, 38 runs and 33 earned runs, with 293 strikeouts and 85 walks. Junior Bailey Erwin is 13-3 with a 1.32 ERA in 101.0 innings with four saves, and is allowing 90 hits, 34 runs and 19 earned runs with 58 strikeouts and 18 walks. Sophomore Caitlin Sill is 10-3 with a 2.34 ERA in 86.2 innings, allowing 66 hits, 35 runs and 29 earned runs, with 60 strikeouts and 34 walks.
Tulsa is 12-7 all-time in C-USA Tournament games. The Golden Hurricane has won the event three times - in 2006, 2009 and 2012. TU was the top seed each time it won the tournament. The Hurricane has participated in all nine tournaments as a member of Conference USA
