Jan. 31, 2013
Tulsa, Oklahoma - The No. 23-ranked Tulsa women's tennis team claimed a 6-1 victory over the Wichita State Shockers in a non-conference matchup on Thursday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the TU campus. Tulsa improved to 4-1 on the season, while the Shockers fell to 2-4. The Hurricane jumped out to the early lead by capturing the doubles point as the No. 1 team of Samantha Vickers and Isaura Enrique, the nation's ninth-ranked doubles team, claimed an 8-2 victory and the freshman tandem of Renata Kuricova and Belen Rivera topped off the doubles point with an 8-4 win.
At No. 1 singles, Vickers won her match in quick fashion with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Lucia Kovalova, while Kuricova gave the Hurricane a 3-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Julia Schiller at the No. 6 position. Senior Michelle Farley sealed the team victory for the Hurricane at the No. 4 position with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Carla Venticinque to give the home team a 4-0 lead. Tulsa's Enrique defeated Wichita State's Rebecca Pedrazzi at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 4-6, and captured the tiebreaker in the final set. Freshman Carol Benito was the next to finish her match at flight 5 giving the Hurricane a 6-0 lead. Benito had a relatively easy first set winning 6-3, then clinched the point 7-6 in the second set by winning with a 7-4 tiebreaker. The final match of the day went three sets between Tulsa's Maria Sant'Anna and the Shockers' Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul, at flight three. Sant Anna lost the first set 6-7 against Mahajaroenkul, but came back strong in the second set with a 6-2 win. However, Mahajaroenkul grabbed the victory in the tiebreaker to prevent a Golden Hurricane sweep. Tulsa returns to the Michael D. Case Tennis Center to host Conference USA rival and No. 32-ranked Rice on Sunday morning at 10:00 am. For all Tulsa tennis news and information visit www.TulsaHurricane.com.
