Tulsa, Oklahoma - Tulsa's Samantha Vickers, Isaura Enrique and Michelle Farley captured impressive victories at the top three singles positions in leading the No. 23-ranked Tulsa women's tennis team to a 5-2 victory over Conference USA rival Rice on Sunday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Tulsa improved to 5-1 on the season, while the 32nd-ranked Rice Owls fell to 3-3.

After the Hurricane took an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point, Vickers' win at flight one put Tulsa ahead of the Owls 2-0 in the team scoring. Vickers, ranked 124th in the nation, dominated the nation's 50th-ranked Natalie Beazant by scores of 6-2 and 6-0.

Senior Michelle Farley gave Tulsa a 3-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Katie Gater in the third flight. Tulsa clinched the team victory moments later when sophomore Isaura Enrique put the Hurricane ahead 4-0 when she turned back Rice's Dominique Harmath 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 position.

Rice captured its first point making the score 4-1 when Liat Zimmerman took a two-set victory over Tulsa freshman Saana Saarteinen at the No. 5 position, winning 6-4, 6-2. The Owls made it 4-2 when Solomiya Zinko downed Carol Benito 6-3, 6-4 at flight No. 6.

Tulsa's Maria Sant'Anna and Rice's Kimberly Anicete, a pair of juniors, had a stiff battle at flight 4, going to tiebreakers in both sets as Sant'Anna captured the 7-6, 7-6 win to close out the match and give the Hurricane a 5-2 victory. She won the tiebreakers 7-5 and 7-4.

 

 

The Hurricane jumped out to the 1-0 lead by grabbing the doubles victory with wins by the nation's ninth-ranked doubles tandem of Vickers and Enrique at the No. 1 flight, 8-3, over Rice's 56th-ranked team of Beazant and Harmath. After trailing 3-2, Tulsa's No. 3 duo of Renata Kuricova and Maria Sant'Anna scored four straight points against Rice's Zinko and Zimmerman to take a 6-3 lead and held on for an 8-6 victory to clinch the doubles point for Tulsa.

Tulsa will play its next six matches on the road before returning to the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on March 3rd to face South Alabama in a 12:00 noon match.
